This creation reminds me of a courtyard in San Francsico behind 30 Varennes St. The clotheslines on pulleys were shared with neighbors across the way. The courtyard was small and dark, but often, in a flourescent-lit room you could hear the happy sounds of mixing mah-jong tiles.
